Things Cornwall

Cornish traditional music played by Dalla at the additional “Nos Lowen” event hosted by Asturia … fine food and well-poured cider too – cheers, 😀

The dance – Mr Martin’s Reel (collected by Mr Hedley Martin in a place called Morval, near Looe) – is well known across Cornwall, and was danced at family parties, usually in a kitchen on the slate slabs. Young people would travel from farm to farm during the festive seasons, drink cider, socialise and perform such dances as this by way of entertainment. Often the dance was done in fairly heavy clogs with iron scoots, like horseshoes, on the bottom to increase the noise of step dancing.

“Nos Lowen” is Cornish for “Happy Night” … full of dancing, singing, eating and drinking … similar to a
Breton “Fest Noz”…

So I am devoting this week and probably the next week  to Cornwall. Reasons? Nostalgia. I remember I covered something about Dalla a year or two ago and at that time everything was  OK in my life. I had not much worries. My constant happiness was keeping this blog up to date and also participating in my blogger community and writing posts.

Time has made things changed. I am glad I’m still here. I am glad I am hanging on and still keeping this page current. Now I love looking at the beautiful pictures of Cornwall. So relaxing. Cornwall is known for its beaches and rugged coastline. What’s more exciting is that there is a thriving traditional scene there.  Just listen to this sound clip by Matthew Clarke:

To demonstrate further, Cornwall here’s a nice view of the Cornwall coast.

Right now I am still getting to know more about the culture of Cornwall and the people who play a big part on the propagation of it. I am currently working on an interview of Craig Weatherhill.

Just in time for the Thanksgiving, Shishonnah has just released their album Elysian Dreams. I would describe the work of the duo Jenne Lennon and Liz Madden as a cross between Dead Can Dance, Loreena Mckennitt and Clannad.

I also got a scoop that Moya Brennan did guest vocals for Secret Garden. This is  an amazing project since I am  a big fan of both Clannad, Secret Garden and Moya’s own solo career. The song is “The Dream” taken from “Winter Poem“. More here: http://www.clannad.nl/2011/10/moya-brennan-on-secret-garden-single.html

Paul Jarvis: Thoughts from the Youngest of The Brennans

Making funny faces:Paul and Aisling

Making funny faces:Paul and Aisling

Our week opens heralding the month of May, the celebration of Beltane. My friend Jenny said it is Spring in Europe, the season of love.  Spring reminds us of the beauty of youth, the freshness of everything, the first bloom of flowers and the warm colors of the day. They say it is the youth that carries the legacy of our ancestors into the new era. I believe so. And since youth is our theme for this week, I have the honor to present to you my guest , who is young, musical and Irish.

Paul Jarvis is the son of Tim Jarvis, a freelance photographer and Moya Brennan lead singer of Clannad and the First Lady of Celtic music.  He performed in his mother’s recording at an age of four! He  also sometimes perform side by side his sister Aisling. Music is in the genes. You will find out through this nice  one on one with Paul.

  • How is it like growing up with the Brennans?

I love it, but I don’t really have anything to compare it to. There such a great family. The best is when all nine of the Brennan brothers and sisters go up to Donegal for Christmas. There is always something mad happening! It is quite hard for Olive my auntie to come over because of living in Australia, but when she does come she often brings my cousin Callum over, whom i get on very well with, and in Ireland I spend a lot of time with Pól’s son Ember, he’s a great lad!

One of those rare moments with Mom

One of those rare moments with Mom

  • Your mom has performed many concerts. Does she sometimes bring you along?

I have traveled quite a lot with my mum. She does many gigs in Europe so it’s not too hard to go and meet her, and sometimes (but very rarely) she takes us to places such as America or Tanzania. We kind of turn them into holidays while we’re there as well. So it can be a great experience! Although my sister, Aisling, has started to travel a lot more with my mum. She plays with her regularly now.

  • In Whisper to the Wild Water, you appeared narrating a speech in Gaelic about St Francis of the Assisi. It’s a beautiful piece. How old were you at that time? It’s a moving track.

I was, I think four years old at the time of recording. At the time I didn’t have a clue what the words meant because it was all in Irish and I couldn’t speak it back then. When recording my mum sat next to me and told me the words and then i repeated it into the mic, and that’s how it was recorded. i was also asked to go over to sing it in Japan, but I was too scared of the crowds at that age, so I never performed it live with my mum.

  • Your sister Aisling is also getting involved with music and also performed with your mom. Do you wish to follow the same path someday?

I would love to start playing with my mum in the future, I just need to up my standard, so it should be good if I do get around to it in the next few years. i wouldn’t be able to play next year though because I have my big school exams, but after.

  • You are currently studying right? What type of music do the guys listen in your college?

Yes, I am in my secondary school currently and I do eight subjects, one of which is music. It is mostly classical music but there is some Irish traditional music as well.

  • How do fans of Clannad and your mom treat you when they spot you?

There are a few of my mum’s fans who would recognize me but apart from that, I don’t think they would recognize me!

I am sending my prayers of support to our Japanese brothers and sisters. They are experiencing grief due to the earthquake and tsunami that hit the coast today. Intensity 8.9 showed its destructive fangs . I also have two pals who have families over there and there is no news as of the moment because of communications and electricity problems.

This is a dark moment in history. It would be appreciated if you all offer a moment of contemplation, especially all of you who are reading this from around the world. As what my friend Jeremy from Poland said: It’s a reminder that the Earth is so much bigger than us, I suppose…

For the taste of Irish music played in Shamisen. This is my favorite instrument and my interest on it grew after reading(and watching the movie version) of Memoirs of a Geisha.

Monsters of Shamisen with Mike Penny, Masahiro Nitta, Kevin Kmetz a remarkable group that is taking japanese Tsugaru Shamisen into a new direction. This time they perform Irish music on shamisen.

Waiting For St. Paddy .

I had an overtime today for some remote training. Instead of heading home right away( because I feel tired, sleepy and hungry), I decided to cast these feelings aside and log on here. Yes it makes me happy to be able to send a  love letter to the world by bringing out interesting bands.

In this uncertain times there are  few that you can rely on. Even best friends can fail you. Yes even the best and the brightest people can fail. The only things  worth holding on to are 1. Family members 2. Music…well the rest follows but these two made it to the top list. I believe that blood is thicker than water. I know that family is not really defined by blood ties and you can find a family in everyone but then again that’s rare. Anyway just a little bit of things I think about there…

For the news:
