New Song Johnny and June by Mary Fahl

Great News! Mary Fahl’s new song is now available for listening in her official website. Johnny and June is a narrative song about a young man’s plight-our modern day Romeo. Always expect romance, suspense, and even visions of a grand scale when Mary dabbles into lyric writing.  The style is something you’d expect from Joni Mitchell , Leonard Cohen or even Dougie MacLean. But then there’s that unmistakable big voice filled with power and nuance at the same time.

Gypsy Nomads are going to take their music on the road with 30 shows across the United States.

Here’s more from the press release:

“Primitive drums, excitement, blood roiling passion, sorcery, artistry,

sonic grace, unstoppable Gypsy power.” – Event Promoter, Wicked Faire

“The gypsy-cabaret duo sounds like it could be the poster act for Magic:

The Gathering, but the team of Samantha Stephenson and Scott Helland is

more of a neo-medieval band that takes inspiration from French singer

Francoise Hardy and alt-rock icon Siouxsie Sioux.” – Richard Gintowt, The

Pitch

**THE GYPSY NOMADS TAKE DYNAMIC PUNK/CELTIC CABARET ON THE ROAD WITH OVER 30 US SHOWS**

**NEW ALBUM HAPPY MADNESS OUT JULY 13**

New York, NY – In true nomadic fashion, the New York-based duo The Gypsy Nomads are on the move, announcing a cross-country tour that will stretch throughout the summer and right into the fall. Affectionately known as ‘Frenchy and the Punk’, the Celtic cabaret effectively channels the spirit of the gypsy sound with a neo-medieval flavor, rooted in the traditions of punk and folk music. After kicking off earlier this month, the tour will wind its way through America, making stops in major cities including Nashville, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Chicago before ending at SteamCon in Seattle on November 19.

The Gypsy Nomads, composed of French-born Brit Samantha Stephenson and ex-Deep Wound punkster, Scott Helland, have been touring relentlessly since 2005. From raucous, danceable old-world melodies with cheeky stories sung in English and French, to pounding, tribal-march-style drum instrumentals, this creative duo’s quirky and captivating show has garnered attention for its high energy and honest musicality. Their songs have been licensed for Indie films and television, and have already been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show and WE TV’s Gothic Wedding. Their fourth full-length album is out July 13, 2010.

Mary Fahl Kicks Off May Concerts

Sleepthief posted October Project’s Bury my Lovely video in Facebook  yesterday. Which in turn made me curious about what Mary Fahl is doing these days. Well, her official site posted schedules for concerts which will be held in May. Great to those who will get their tickets early and who are around the area where she is performing. Big thanks to coveredus of YouTube for posting the House Concert update that took place this December. This will give you an idea what to expect when you watch Mary Fahl’s performances.

I look forward to a Mary Fah and Sleepthief collaboration. Do you think so too?

mary_set1_top_right1Well , well, well! This has been long anticipated and at last the ‘Aurora Borealis’ voice is once again in full form and doing concerts all around. For those of you new to her, Mary Fahl did the lead vocals for October Project. The band made a huge impression globally and was even featured several times in local song magazines here in the Philippines (my friend even remarked: How can you play these songs with all these complicated chords!). But apart for the lush orchestration and wonderful melodies, the center was her voice! The commanding presence of that rich ethereal contralto has never failed to raise curiosity among music lovers. I thought I’d never hear any news after ‘The Other Side of Time” but wow she is back. She is really back!!!!

Have You Seen This Mary Fahl Video?

I got this one uploaded by This Year’s Model. It says: Mary Fahl Performs “Going Home” at the Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River, MA on May 9, 2009. Accompanied by Glenn Patscha and Byron Isaacs.

Wow she is still out there performing beautiful music. I should say that she is looking more beautiful than ever, and twice talented than the rest of the singers being played on the radio. Being a graduate of medieval literature , then traveling to Europe and doing  ‘research ‘ listening to recordings in libraries afforded her the references she need . She’s got the brains and the cool factor seldom seen on divas (and I mean when you really finally get to talk to them and wonder what they really are in person) Keep it up Mary Fahl and we demand more more more!

October Project…. Still Haunts Us

Is e ‘n cadal fada ni ‘n t-iomradh teth.

  • Long sleep makes hot rowing.-Old Scottish Proverb.

In 1996, Sony Music killed the career of the most promising, most talented band ever to grace the face of music. I remember when my friend Hannah who told me she kept a copy of October Project‘s debut album for me on the record store. It’s the most beautiful music I have ever heard coming from a folk/alternative scene. And much more , because Mary Fahl‘s voice became the center of the band’s artistry. Her’s was labeled as ‘the kiss of the vampire’. Dark, dramatic and often time ethereal, Mary has the voice that can match Lisa Gerrard‘s cinematic appeal as well as Moya Brennan‘s Celtic cries. But yes they didn’t sell as expected because there was no support from the record company in the first place. Now, people still continue to rediscover them from Amazon as well as any source including You Tube. Yes the unrest for the injustice continues!
