The Loreena McKennitt Canadian Summer Tour Up Now!

1128981_356x237Good news Canadian fans! Loreena McKennitt will be at the hometown this July for her Canadian summer tour. Quinlan Road website confirms:

Following a highly successful Mediterranean & middle Eastern tour, Loreena McKennitt has added two more concerts to her Canadian summer festival tour — she and her band will present two performances in her hometown of Stratford, Ontario.

The concerts, will be held on Wednesday July 22 and Thursday July 23, will be held at Knox Church, 142 Ontario Street, Stratford.

The Stratford shows come in the middle of a brief Canadian festival tour that’s due to start at Le Festival d’été de Quebec in Quebec City on July10, followed by appearances at the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest and the Winnipeg Folk Festival.

The two Stratford concerts will be followed by appearances at the Hillside Festival in Guelph and the Calgary Folk Festival.

“We’ve toured extensively throughout Europe & North America these past few years and yet have not performed in Stratford since 1995. Many people I run into in my everyday life in Stratford have not seen us perform, and  they have kept cajoling me, ‘When are you going to perform here?’  Although the church sanctuary is not a concert hall, it is a very beautiful space and one I have been very fond since I first came to Stratford in 1981.

Her band includes Brian Hughes (guitar, bouzouki), Jon Pilatzke (violin), Caroline Lavelle (cello), Donald Quan (keyboards), Ben Grossman (hurdy gurdy), Clive Deamer (drums), Simon Edwards (bass) and Rick Lazar (percussion).

The Hurdy-Gurdy

Hurdy-Gurdy

Hurdy-Gurdy

You might have noticed this peculiar instrument feature on a Denez Prigent performance which I linked on my last blog .It was about about Breton music. This instrument is no other than the hurdy-gurdy. A lot will be said about this instrument if you click on the name link. It dates back to the 12th century and has been associated with medieval music. It has however become ‘fashionable ‘among musicians who make World Music. A Loreena McKennit video called The Mummer’s Dance also features the hurdy-gurdy.Now just in case you want to know how it really sounds like as a solo instrument, then check this out.

Loreena McKennitt Tour Rescheduled Updates!

Due to a recent family emergency,Loreena McKennitt has rescheduled her Mediterranean tour.

According to Qnlan Road, her own record label:

Loreena McKennitt’s Greek concerts rescheduled to close Mediterranean tour

June 8, 2009

Loreena McKennitt’s three concerts in Greece have been rescheduled, the singer announced today.  The tour, which was to have begun in Fez Morocco, will now open in Turkey, with a major concert in Istanbul on Saturday June 13 — and the Greek concerts will come at the end of the tour.

The rescheduled Greek dates are now June 27 at the Ancient Odeum at Patra, June 28 at Moni Lazariston in Thessaloniki, and June 29 at Theatro Vrachon in Athens.

Concertgoers do not need to exchange their tickets; tickets for the original dates will be honoured. Tickets are still available for the three concerts, and will return for sale on Tuesday, June 9.

Ms. McKennitt’s long awaited Mediterranean tour has been complicated by the illness of her mother, which caused the cancellation of a performance at the Festival of World Sacred Music in Fez Morocco.

“I am relieved that my mother’s health issues are stabilized, and look forward to embarking on this tour. I so look forward to meeting audiences in Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon, Hungary, Sicily and Greece,” she stated.

As a result of the Fez cancellation and original Greek postponements, regrettably, Loreena’s appearance in Tel Aviv on June 18th will be rescheduled at the request of the local promoter.

Celtic Recipes? Anybody?

OK I am soooo off to bed!

Celtic Spirit(A compilation by Narada records)

41XM3CG0QQL__SL500_AA240_  If you are into meditation or spiritual music then you better pick up Celtic Spirit . Released by Narada records ( which brought us a lot of World and New Age compilations), this abum promises to draw new listeners and sooth old ears.

Artists like Connie Dover, Aoife Ní Fhearraigh and Sheena Wellington will attract people who like Enya, Loreena McKennitt and Moya Brennan. You will also find wonderful Instrumental pieces by Anjali Quartet and Áine Minogue. If you are into Gregorian Chants, then othe compositions in accapella will delight you.

What I like about Narada compilations is that they introduce the best recordings of each artist under the theme. Therefore it makes you want to look for an album release. That’s what Connie Dover did to me. So, if you want  something spiritual but with a bit of secular style, then this is for you. If you just love heavenly voices then Celtic Spirit will give you a glimpse of angels at the gates of heaven.
