Soundtrack for the Rain:Luka Bloom

In this kind of weather, It make one yearn for something intimate and bare. You know, something that could accompany you over a cup of warm coffee. That is why,Luka Bloom’s music is very appropriate .

Born Kevin Barry Moore, May 23 1955 ,he is the younger brother of Christy Moore. He had to change his name to Luka Bloom in order to avoid the pressure of being related to  his already successful older brother. The name “Luka” is taken from a Suzanne Vega song about ‘child abuse’ while Bloom is from the character in James Joyce’s Ulysses.

His music is defined as ‘electro-acoustic’  . Problems with his fingers(tendinitis) made him give up  finger picking style and opted for a frenetic strumming which he is now known for. The first time I heard him was through a ‘Celtic Season” compilation album. The track is called ‘Listen to the River”.

From then on I knew I have to look for his albums. Right now I have his 1990 album called Riverside. Comprised of 12 tracks, this album promises warm acoustic tracks that are either slow or simply rock and roll. The preference in  using  all acoustic guitars on each track makes the whole album lively without being noisy. It also showcases his husky baritone. I think the most humorous track is “An Irishman in Chinatown’ .

All about the bodhran(Irish frame drum)

bodhran

Been a fan of this percussion instrument for God knows how long. There is something about it that calls to mind the feelings on anticipation, excitement, glee and of course sensuality. It’s the quality of the bodhran’s sound that is unparalleled by other percussion instrument. There is expressiveness there and yes love by its creator. My friend Brandon has a bodhran. Someone in Multiply asked me if there is a store that sells bodhran here. What” In the Philippines? Unless there’s a marooned Irish musician, then you’ll be in luck.

Quick info:

The bodhrán (pronounced /ˈbɔːrɑːn/ or /ˈbaʊrɑːn/; plural bodhráns or bodhráin) is an Irish frame drum ranging from 25 to 65cm (10″ to 26″) in diameter, with most drums measuring 35 to 45cm (14″ to 18″). The sides of the drum are 9 to 20cm (3½” to 8″) deep. A goatskin head is tacked to one side (although nowadays, synthetic heads, or new materials like kangaroo skin, are sometimes used). The other side is open ended for one hand to be placed against the inside of the drum head to control the pitch and timbre. One or two crossbars, sometimes removable, may be inside the frame, but this is increasingly rare on professional instruments. Some professional modern bodhráns integrate mechanical tuning systems similar to those used on drums found in drum kits.

History

There is evidence that the bodhrán was used during the Irish rebellion of 1603, by the Irish forces as a battle drum, or that the use of the drum was to provide a cadence for the pipers and warriors to keep to, as well as announce the arrival of the army. This leads some to think that the bodhrán was derived from an old Celtic war drum.

Loreena McKennitt forced to cancel festival appearance in Fez, Morocco

A family emergency has forced Canadian Celtic superstar Loreena McKennitt from performing in a festival in Morocco.

Quinlan Road says:

Loreena McKennitt has been forced to cancel the opening concert of her upcoming Mediterranean tour.

She will be unable to participate in the Festival of World Sacred Music in Fez, Morocco; she was due to perform there next Saturday, June 6.

“I’m facing a grave family emergency and being away from home at this time is not an option,” the Stratford, Ontario-based singer said.  “It is most difficult to make this unprecedented decision to cancel a concert so close to its date”

”It’s my greatest hope that I will be able to play this prestigious festival — I’ve been aware of it for so many years — in the future.”

A Mummer’s Dance Through Ireland is the singer’s latest album which is a compilation of her Irish themed songs.

Well I just hope her family would recover soon.My best wishes to her and her band.

I’m going to see Ewan MacGregor .

Irish Independent:The 38-year-old McGregor plays Camerlengo Patrick McKenna, an ultra-zealous Irish papal deputy determined to defend the Church from malign forces.

5398921  My favorite Scottish actor  Ewan MacGregor  is back  for the sequel to The Da Vinci Code.I am looking forward to this movie. My friends have seen it and they said Ewan’s character in Angels and Demons is great and his performance is simply superb. It was Trainspotting that caught my attention. Yes yes yes he CAN sing as evident in Maulin Rouge.
