American music is owing Irish tradition for importing the style through the immigrants that helped shape America as it is now. There is something magical upon knowing that everything is related and that universal appeal not only means that people recognize the music; it also means that we do speak a common language through the heart.

For the Love of Selkies: Ondine

Selkies are mythical creatures who, once in a while shed off their seal skins and become human . Sometimes a selkie falls in love with a mortal man. But husband would always look out for her. If a mortal buries her seal skin then she cannot return to the sea.

Such a myth surrounds this heart warming movie directed by Neil Jordan( Interview with the Vampire). This story is very Irish and it has all the cinematography you would expect. It stars Colin Farrel as the fisherman who one day found a mysterious woman by the name of Ondine caught in his net. She sings to him and brings him good luck. But is Ondine really a selkie? Or the other truth is not as attractive as the truth you wish to hear.

New Painting from Donie Ryan

Remember him from our last interview? Donie has a new painting out and  I am honored that it is hanging now on the wall of this site. He’s fresh from a trip at Bere Island ,West Cork where his mom lives.

Donie is naturally inspired by what he sees around him and also everyone he meets. Cranescape is the title of this latest piece. It’s oil on canvas, took him about six months,on and off .The dimension is .5x.5 meters. If you want to take a look at his other artworks then you can reach him here: donieryan1@gmail.com

The Pride of County Cork: North Cregg

It pleases me to know if a band has a female vocalist. And when that vocalist sounds like her throat is fashioned after an angel’s wings , then it becomes an obsession for me. Not since Capercaillie has a band been so tight , so sure and so haunting. So much of Ireland’s ancient spirit inhabits this band from Country Cork. Go Your Way has that gradual marching tempo that resonates with beaty amidst this heartbreaking piece. In contrast, Crehan’s Reels is infectious capturing the atmosphere of taverns and the merry folks having a toast and dancing .

I have been bewitched!

Fun Facts

How are you doing fellas? What’s the craic?

As usual I am stuck here in my little padded cell enjoying the time of the month when the wind blows cold and there’s a light drizzle when you ride a bus. I haven’t done my research and assignments yet and so I am still listening to my old records. I met a guy who plays a violin a couple of days ago and I was thinking of starting a collaboration about Celtic music. But then again that is just a thought that crossed my mind. Nothing serious to that.

My friend in Dublin is celebrating his birthday today the 15th. Happy Birthday Donie. You remember we featured him as our guest painter last time. This time of the year ,a lot of good bands are on tour and I will be looking for them. For now I have this cool link to a site that offers fun facts about Ireland. Take a look at this link: http://www.ireland-fun-facts.com/ireland-facts.html

I realize there is no pic to show today. Oh well , I will catch up next time.
