The Maggie Whackers

French band doing Celtic music whacks your belly with  humor.

Great! Here is a French band here playing Celtic music. They are Fun. Well, they take their music seriously though. You can tell by listening to sample tracks off their MySpace site. I checked their website. I went to their photo gallery. There is this one picture where the piper stuffed all the whistles and flutes in his right pocket. The fiddler looks a bit like a Goth chic minus the angst.

What about the music? It is anything you’d expect from a Celtic rock band. But you have to think of something a little but edgy like for comparison. Think of the Pogues and Horslips. I do know bands that are comfortable to jam with them in the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany.  It is just a matter of time. I recommend that you give them a listen if you are in the mood for some Celtic rock-if you find the slurring make vocals with French accent your kind of thing.

The played last June 22 in the recent Fête de la musique  in Talmont Saint Hilaire .

Gallows Tree Tales Album Teaser

What’s coming t0 this site.

This teaser came out around May 14 but due to health reasons as well as mixed up schedules, most of my notes and reminders got mixed up with other stuff. Anyway I found them. And oh I got a good news for you fellas. This will become a .com soon. Love it? I think there is credibility when you own a domain.

I  know I write articles that you will never ever see in other music sites and yes I have more interviews than other websites run by three or more people and I think it is time to take that asset into good use. I have to admit I am nervous.  Before, I used to only think about just writing. Now there will be responsibilities that will come about when this becomes an e magazine devoted to Celtic music.

I want to thank all of you for being with me since 2009. I know I have lost followers and also gained new ones. This would not have been possible without you my beloved readers. For a blogger, the only consolation he has is knowing someone out there reads what he writes. I don’t really generate income out of this but in the future to make this more of a quality site donations will be welcomed.

Irish Rocker based in London has an LP coming soon.

Remember Slim? I wrote about him way back and he is releasing an LP this summer of 2012. This teaser will give you an idea what the whole album sounds like. His music has always been personal and the songs touch your core like no other. In the midst of the rockin’ drums and guitars is a healing bough…he is a wise Celtic rocker beyond his years.

Black 47-A Funky Ceili And Other New Releases

“Fans have long been demanding an all out party album but the idea took hold when, driving home from Boston, I couldn’t find a CD to keep me awake but thought of over 30 Black 47 songs that could do the trick. And so – A Funky Ceili.”

Interview excerpt– from Larry Kirwan

The first time I heard them I though Robert Smith of the Cure had gone Celtic Rock. But Black 47 combine elements from Reggae, Hip Hop modern and traditional Jazz. Apart from the known instruments, the band are composed of excellent musicians formed in New York around 1989.

This is a party CD that will blend with your other collections . Yes they are hip and stylish but they also keep in touch with their political stance.Personal favorites are: Maria’s Wedding with its breezy alternative style reminiscent of bands like Hootie and the Blowfish and Gin Blossoms- plus  that distinctive vocals of Larry Kirwan. The schizo Bells of Hell is really fun which calls to mind endless nights of partying and excess but all in good spirits. Bodhrans on the Bran is really Celtic as any Celtic rock could get. I Got Laid On James Joyce’s Grave closes the album. It is a naughty and funny track with Gothic excess-something  which reminds me of New Orleans sound.

Everything in this album bumps and pulses. No need for you to think deep thoughts. Just the pure fun of knowing that Black 47 is there to shake your day into burst of ecstatic energy.

Hacking the Scene with the Pogues

Like Goth kids, You can’t hack the scene without naming bands like Bauhaus, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees or The Diary of Dreams. The same thing goes for Celtic Rock. Names like Dropkick Murphy’s, Seven Nations, Enter the Haggis and The Pogues are just few names that make up the entire umbrella of music. So , when you have the pass code, you’re in.

This music has never been more hip and relevant in today’s concert scene.

The Pogues have always served as an example of a band that never aims to please anybody for the sake of  having a top 40 tune out there in the charts. They have created a style of their own without caring what critics  say . There are even some song titles that can bring a shiver to anyone who thinks Celtic music is supposed to be polite and ‘safe’.

The scruffy voice of Shane McGowan is there to remind us , that what is Irish music if it’s just about glens and hills…and never about Guinness or Leprechauns. Surely , the naughty punk sensibilities should always remain if the spirit if the music has to survive. The Pogues along with other bands have brought the spirit of the music to the new century. And everyone keeps digging the scene, people of all races and geographical locations. This is the new age of Irish rock.
