Hungry For (Celtic) Tunes…

I’ve grown comfortable writing in tabloid style. A friend will sometimes tell me that I made a mistake in spelling and other words. And I am grateful when people are honest with me. The thing is, when I write I type furiously and I get to the point where editing becomes secondary. I am also excited to share and sometimes I just type away and publish without checking twice.

I do know that editing is very important and I need to be at par in terms of quality. I tend to agree however, I also know that traffic for artists count. And this is also important to me. Lately I am able to observe  a lot of things in different angles. The way I see how I write here and my other blogs. I want to create a cohesive image based on intimacy. I like to write the way I am talking to a friend I have known for a long time. There are times when I do get a bit preachy I think. Perhaps this is brought about by forced confidence. But I hope things will have an anchor now that I am set to write things that not only inform but also relate.

Music plays an important part of my life. A couple of days ago someone offered to buy this old laptop. I laughed because I remember the things this little guy gave me.  It has brought me not only music and friendship but it has also brought me people I hold close to my heart with so much love. This was where I met my love and this also where my heart got broken. You see I can’t part from it even if I will have  anew one. My life line  is written in bolder strokes with this little baby. The title of this article is inspired by someone who retweeted my link. Thanks Twitter  but most of all the lovely people around it.

Now for the music….

Irish Television Going Mobile

The great thing about Ireland is the continuous innovation in terms of Science and media. Today I got a link about Aer Tv and this is actually a tV geared not only for online browsing via computers but also works in mobile devices that support at least 1 mbps broadband download.

Check out Irish musicians to perform around 7:30 Irish time and enjoy the music in your mobile devices. With web TV Irish music can reach millions around the world. So I wish musicians will read this news and get into the bandwagon. It will be an exciring thing to see you on Aer TV one of these days. It’s for free and all you need to do is register to get the latest news.

Cornish Ballad from Kernowpods (Matthew Clarke)

Song description:

This is the full Skwardya version. Dave Miller has been around to record guitars.

This song is about Mary Kelynack who walked to London to meet Queen Victoria at the Great Exhibition.

There are times I go for slurring vocals. Cornish artists are just around the bend. All we need to do is look for them. This blog likes to represent the Celtic nations and whatever type of music people from this region make. Matthew Clarke has been one of the major voices in Cornish music and culture and the other half of Skwardya.

Here’s another Cornish stuff from the same band that I like.

SHISHONNAH Launches New Album “Elysian Dreams”

I am clapping with glee in this news about my friend Jenne Lennon. This is a nice treat. This is just a copy of  a press release I received. Please read!

SHISHONNAH Launches New Album
This Thanksgiving Thursday, November 24th,  International
duo Shishonnah release their new album, “Elysian Dreams” on I-Tunes and other online music stores worldwide.

The album “Elysian Dreams” is an eclectic blend of world, classical, contemporary, Native American and Irish/Celtic Folk sounds. Two songs taken from the album were released earlier this year. “I will carry you” and “Dance with the River” met with immediate positive responses from live audiences and the broadcast community with both songs play-listed on radio. This incredible new album also features a narration by Choctaw elder, Gary White Deer.

SHISHONNAH, formed in May 2010, is a merger of the talents of Irish artist Liz Madden and US artist Jenne Lennon—both accomplished musicians, performers and songwriters. They blend their Irish and American musical heritage with their Celtic and Native American traditions, essentially creating their own distinctive and innovative sound.  Their original songs will take you to a place that defines the human experience and uplifts the soul.  With incredible vocal arrangements, their sound reflects a canvas as diverse as the lands of their upbringing. The album is as much an instrumental as vocal with the ladies playing piano, harp, bodhran, whistle, Native American flute, keyboards and percussion.

Madden and Lennon have performed and headlined individually in venues worldwide, including the renowned Festival Interceltique in Lorient.  As Shishonnah, their most recent performance with the renowned Elgin Children’s Chorus under the direction of Jay Kellner for their Isle of Song concert which received superlative reviews and ovations beyond all expectations.  Their first two singles “Dance With The River” and “I Will Carry You” can be heard on The Celtic/New Age Hour every Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Easter on Women of Substance Radio, Indie Castle Radio, Vents Music Radio, Celtica Radio Ltd., Radio Crystal Blue, Underworld Mix Radio, Celtic Roots Radio, Music You Can’t Hear On the Radio, and many more! They are currently finalizing dates for their 2012 tour, which will include the United States, the U.K., Ireland, and Europe. They kick of St. Patrick’s Day 2012 with a number of performances in Chicago!

The Fleadh

I love the feeling of being preoccupied. It makes you dwell less on memories. It makes you more of a human being than a helpless victim of fate. When the mother of my boss passed away, she felt so terrible that all she could do was throw herself on her job. She worked and worked to deal with pain. She had over time and she was  doing a lot of things. She told me that if she even contemplate on it , would feel so bad that it would consume her. I remember giving her a tight hug because there’s nothing else to say. You can’t know the extent of pain a person feels until you’ve been through the same situation.

Music is a healer. I think time and music go hand in hand. Can’t say too much about mine but we are all travelers and we all deal with pain our own way. Next time, let us be kinder to others in our words and deeds. Because kindness begets kindness. …

Bodhrán Music Session in Cavan Rugby Football Club During Fleadh Cheoil na hÉirinn 2010. Recorded by http://www.drumlinmedia.com

An exciting thing happens in Ireland and the rest annually. The Fleadh has been a subject of articles as well as media coverage, because it has been around since 1951. It is great to see artists play in a casual setting , sometimes on a small stage or just within a crowd .  I think this is where you get the “Celtic spirit”. I went to The Fleadh website and found this info:

About the Fleadh

At the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann inaugural meeting in September 1951 it was decided to create a national festival named Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann (Festival of Music in Ireland).

County, provincial and worldwide Fleadhanna are very important events in the traditional Irish music calendar and annual Comhaltas events include Fleadh Nua, Fleadh na Breataine (an All-Britain Fleadh Cheoil), regional Fleadhanna in Britain, Japan and the USA.

The goal of the Fleadh Cheoil has been to establish standards in Irish traditional music through competition. The Fleadh has developed as a mainly competitive event, but also includes showcases of concerts, céilithe, parades, pageants, and street sessions.

The continued growth in the number and standard of Fleadhanna held have facilitated competitors to qualify from county, provincial and regional levels for the All-Ireland finals at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

The Fleadhanna at each level provide a platform and a meeting place for over 10,000 musicians, who carry on the great tradition of playing and cherishing our music, songs, and dances.

And when the competitions are over, many impromptu sessions take place which sometimes last until the early hours.

Check out the website of The Fleadh for more info.

NicGaviskey are a band comprising Irish and American members. They play traditional tunes. They’ve been associated with festivals like the Cavan Feadh as well as other live sessions. After all the meeting of the members happened that way-impromptu playing which resulted to them deciding to really stick together. What i love about this group is the fact that they show us an example how music can bring us close together in friendship. There’s no other type of music that has this magic than Celtic music. There is this fervent devotion it inspires which almost borders on being possessive. I know this feeling. And I miss this too. Check out the group’s website: http://www.nicgaviskey.com/

Quiet Desperation

======================================================

How many of us have been driven out of our homes to seek  greener pastures. As they say, grass is always greener on the other side. Sometimes the feeling of exile does not have to  be physical. It could be a mental state.

Have you ever experienced being in a crowd that you don’t like? It happens when we have to confront situations because we have no choice. As in the case of dealing with people you work with, your neighbors or even your family members.

I like how this song speaks to me now. The first time I heard this I noticed the sad but majestic voice of Christy Moore. Then I read the lyrics. And I said to my self ” man he was signing about my feelings!” I searched the net for the lyrics and chords. I found this one from martinardis.com.

C      D
My soul is in the mountain, My heart is in the land
F   G   C
I’m lost here in the city , There’s so much I don’t understand.
C    D     F       G      C
There’s quiet desperation coming over me, Coming over me.
G  F  C  G   F       C
I’ve got to leave I can’t stay another day, There’s an emptiness inside of me,
G  F C   G       G7
I can’t bear the loneliness out here, There’s another place I’ve got to be.
F    C
Another Place I’ve got to beI long for you, Dakota, The smell of sweet grass on the plainI see too much meanness , And I feel too much pain. And there’s quiet desperation coming over me, Coming over me.I’ve got to leave I can’t stay another day, There’s an emptiness inside of me

I can’t bear the loneliness out here, There’s another place I’ve got to be,

Another place I’ve got to be

Dark Patrick – King of the Fairies/Morrison’s Jig

Have you ever wondered how an Irish Jig sounds like when played in other ethnic instruments? Dark Patrick shows us that  Celtic music works best through fusion. I am getting addicted to this instrument from Ukraine. More info about this:

Goodbyes and Music

One of  Unity our forum members passed away this week. Jared was one of those guys whose posts I liked reading a lot. No negative vibes and he cared about the music. It isn’t easy when someone whom you interacted at one point is gone. Sometimes it is not death that claims us but decision. When we have decided to end that contact with someone, with finality is also a painful experience.

When I started this blog it’s all about the love for the music. It is also a message in a  bottle for those who might want to connect. A year later the prayer has been answered. I met wonderful people. I started drifting away from my Unity friends because this and also my current job has taken so much of my time that Iwas spreading myself too thin.  But I remember how wonderful it was.

I think it was around 2001 when I became an active member of Unity. There I met Kerry, Treecat, Pher, Sil, Gavern and other members. We were all like family considering the fact that I can’t live without logging on everyday and sharing ideas. When I moved to Manila around 2003, that was the time when Unity became an anchor to me. Being in a strange and different place can prove to be a lonely experience. These guys became my mentors. When Enya’s single “Trains and Winter Rains” off her And Winter Came Album came out, we were all on the chatroom listening as Terry Wogan presented the track . It was a big party and that was late 2008.

As I said when I started devoting my time to this blog it took me away from them. Some of the members became friends in facebook.  Whenever  I hear Stevie Nicks I remember Jared because was also a huge fan of her music . Jared will surely be missed.

To all those with an interest in irish history and geneaology, have a look at our website: www.bloodoftheirish.com

Here’s what it says: Have you ever wondered about your Irish family history? Are you interested in Irish origins and Irish geneaology and how far back our story goes?

This landmark two hour documentary asks some fundamental questions about who the Irish are and where we came from to settle on our small green island.

The film travels throughout Ireland and south into Europe and beyond on its quest to trace the earliest peoples to make the journey to Ireland. Were these first pioneers from England or France or as some studies now suggest – northern Spain? On a spectacular journey through the green landscapes of Ireland, the series presenter uses the latest research to try and find the very origins of the early Irish and whose blood flows in our veins.
