Yscolan

A rainy night, sublime music

yscolan is good as I sit in the shining sun, too. Definitely good mood music. Thanks for reminding me of it.-Gwylim Hardy

I am listening to the album called Yscolan which is  a project by Ceri Rhys Matthews and spoken words by Beverley Evans. Occasional fiddle by Christine Cooper. The music of the wooden flute reminds me of forests and mountains. I hear ambient sounds like birds and other natural sounds. This is an aural excursion that is also very visual in a sense that the relaxing melody takes you to places that only the mind can conjure.

Ceri Rhys Matthews has once again created a music that is intriguing apart from his great band Fernhill. I just love the minimal approach of yscolan which is refreshing after too much instruments I have been hearing this weekend.

Here is an interesting blurb:

music on wooden flute from west and south wales

— awel bren dyfed a deheubarth —

played by ceri rhys matthews. spoken word by beverley evans. fiddle by christine cooper

dance tunes, airs, poetry and free verse.

“the album is a delicious mix of traditional melodies, ambient sounds and spoken word” Verity Sharp – Late Junction – BBC radio 3

fernhill’s ceri rhys matthews has released an album of flute music and spoken word called yscolan. it features traditional dance melodies and song airs from south and west wales played solo on wooden flute juxtaposed with extracts of early welsh poetry, spoken word elements and contemporary poetry in both welsh and english read by beverley evans.

fiercely contemporary, yscolan explores the nature of art and the role of the artist, challenging the modernist interpretation of the artist as a central ego working in social and historical isolation.

this haunting piece of work celebrates the fabric of the lives of ordinary people, living and dead, as expressed through their anonymous art, by the inheritors of their legacy.

Those who don’t have her albums yet can listen to sample tracks. Let the healing melody wrap all over you. The title reminds one of Cornwall’s beautiful beaches.Soon it is summer. What a great time to go surfing over there.I was listening to this track again and again today. I am being reminded that there is truth that certain type of music has a calming effect on troubled hearts.

The Celtic Art of Hamish Burgess

The latest addition to Celtic Music fan’s people that make the Celtic world go round. Hamish Burgess is a graphic artist based in the island of Maui Hawaii. His works are amazing and I can look at them for hours and feel totally relaxed and happy. Here’s a little blurb about his profile:

Hamish Douglas Burgess is an artist living on the island of Maui, in the Hawaiian Islands. He continues the ancient practice with his own Celtic art, traditional and modern. Coming from Celtic stock (Scottish), and living for many years in a Celtic area of Britain (Cornwall), he has a love of Celtic art and music instilled in him, producing Celtic artwork in different media, photography from the Celtic Lands, and playing the bagpipes – he also holds the Hawaii State tattoo artist license. He regularly spends time in the ancient Celtic areas of Britain, Ireland and Europe, studying ancient works of Celtic art, and visiting other artists. Recent works have included album covers, book illustrations, commissioned pieces, original celtic tattoos, temporary celtic tattoos and even an entire car!

Two instruments that work together. The mellifluous sound of the uilleann pipes can work well with the acoustic guitar. It is great to see the two instruments make a perfect tandem. Blurb:

I am not done yet. There is still a part 2 to this one.

Gary Diver’s Speech Project.

Listening to Martin Bridgman’s show was like hypnotic suggestion. It puts you in an altered state of consciousness. More so because he featured artist Garry Diver and his amazing Speech Project in which he took samples of spoken tracks from artists and made music out of that pattern..in what is popularly known as speech music. The album is not traditional but it is very Irish and I think I dig the latter as mush as I dig the former. For people with eclectic tastes this will appeal to you. Here is the soundcloud upload that Martin did for his show and I am glad he did it so that people can listen again and again.

I am in the process of interviewing this amazing musician from Cape Breton so the article should be up soon. Kimberly Fraser is really a great story for everyone.

Abagail Grey;Visually Explosive

Celtsmith is a Welsh band led by Derek Smith . Looks familiar? Well that’s because he is directly related to Jamie Smith of Jamie Smith’s Mabon. He is also the  Festival Director and chair person  of Cwlwm Celtaidd, the voluntary organisation that organises the festival under the Porthcawl Interceltic Festival since 2002. Celtsmith is a band to watch out for.

Highly emotive and explosive as icicles in March Abagail Grey, a project by Scottish singer Claire Campbell takes a daring direction in terms of style and interpretation. Her music is very visual and listening to her is like looking at shifting scenes of landscapes when you ride a train long distance. She has perfected the command of atmosphere. Incorporating beats in her music creates a balance that teeters between introspective mood and popish excitement. Elegant as chandeliers on castles yet powerful in an arena rock glamour kind of intensity, Abagail Grey has capture my ears…and heart.
