I have a friend from Nova Scotia and his name is Layne Greene. He comes from a long line of musicians and musical instrument makers. For anyone with Celtic blood in his or her veins, music and instrument making are all part of the tradition. This Grantena is hand made in 1918 by his grandmother’s grandfather. This is the only one in the world.
The bombarde is a loud and intoxicating instrument. In a hands of an expert it becomes addictive. Note the kid in this video…he was covering his ears! Just to cite and example of these really loud Celtic instruments.
Description:
Playing an An Dro with one bombarde and one set of Scottish bagpipes to demonstrate how a standard duet works, with guest star Breton bombarde tutor Gwenael Lamour from Bagad Kemper, visiting New Zealand.
Cornwall is really coming up with wonderful artists and I think my fellow bloggers should write something about this as well. This is a great era for Brythonics. Join me and celebrate the wonderful spirit of Cornwall through Mynstralek !
More about Mynstralek:
Two of Cornwall’s best-loved and talented musicians have teamed up with contemporaries from London and Italy to form a band that fuses Jazz with Celtic music.
Mynstralek features Cornish double bass maestro, Pete Kubryk-Townsend and Dalla’s Neil Davey, together with London-based tenor sax player Dave Blackmore and jazz drummer Andrea Trillo from Italy.
Hi friends. I am subscribed to both Marc Gunn and Poitin so I am always updated when there are releases from them. I am quoting from Marc Gunn’s newsletter :
Greetings Gunn Runners! Mage Records (my label), in conjunction with the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, is proud to release a brand new CD of Irish Celtic Music. In fact, that is the name of this amazing album.
The CD is released under the name Marc Gunn’s Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. It is a new compilation to promote my hit podcast. However, the album also features the incredible music of two of the podcast’s incredible bands: Poitin and FIMM.
I can’t say enough great things about these two bands. They have some absolutely brilliant music! Neither is signed to a record label. Neither are from the U.S.. Poitin is an awesome, award-winning group from the Czech Republic. FIMM is an all-female group from Rome, Italy.
Who are these indie Celtic musicians?
If you’ve never heard of these two amazing and obscure Celtic group, I won’t hold it against you. Neither has a big budget to promote their music. Poitin is fairly active online. I’ve followed their career for many years now. FIMM is currently on hiatus. I’m hoping we can change that.
But you won’t see them on PBS, like Celtic Thunder or Celtic Woman. You won’t hear them playing for a smash hit show like Riverdance. In fact, you can’t even buy FIMM’s album at all…right now.
I’m hoping we can change all of that with the power of social networking and YOU!
I love these bands and I want you to fall in love with them too. So I want you to buy this CD… but NOT YET.
I need your help to Top The Celtic Top 10
On Wednesday, May 23, we are going to rocket this album up the charts on iTunes and Amazon.
Here’s how it works. On May 23rd, I will ask you to buy the song , “Memories of Ireland” on one of those two sites. You will tell all your friends to do the same. Then we will sit back and watch as Irish Celtic Music gets the attention it deserves.
It will skyrocket up the charts. That will offer it more visibility, which will in turn equal more sales, which will ultimately offer more visibility for the podcast, Poitin, FIMM, and all of the other amazing indie Celtic music groups online.
But to make that happen. I need your help. Here’s how:
Go to http://www.celticmusicpodcast.com/topthecharts/ and sign up to the mailing list so I can send you a few notices on the 23rd. Yes. I will be sending several emails that day and as we approach that day. So be ready.
Share this post with your friends. Start talking about the compilation, this initiative and your plan to help.
Thank you so much for all your help! I look forward to seeing a smashing successful Top the Celtic Charts initiative.

Lignit is another project by Jeremy ( Poitin). You might be interested to know that they play really good Bluegrass music. And they are based in Czech Republic where most of the interesting Celtic bands are coming from these days.

Fiach Moriarty, Peter Daldry and Finbar Furey fresh!
Welcome back to new music discoveries…anything Traditional, New Age, World, Folk or something in between as long as it is Celtic and eclectic works for me 😉 I got new arrivals and they are sizzling. I am sure your discriminating ears will agree that this is the site for the hip, the cool and the novel. So let us check what’s new!
I waited a year for something official coming from Fiach Moriarty. This Irish musician has something unique, special and totally captivating to offer. In the tradition of Gilbert O’Sullivan, and Chris De Burgh, Mr Moriarty can tug at your heart strings while healing your soul. Lullabye is the new official video from him.
A one take/no edit video.
Just to explain this video a bit; myself and Bob Kelly came up with this concept about a year ago in Hourican’s bar on Leeson St after a conversation about Samuel Beckett. We wanted to do something a bit different and challenging that would not be easily done. So we hatched a plan to learn a song backwards and from there it grew and developed. We then decided to make it a walking video and mapped out a route. The route involved getting lucky with traffic lights, cars and indeed human traffic and all in one take as well. It also involved me walking backwards throughout. So what you see is the reverse of me walking and singing backwards, which makes me look (slightly) normal and everybody else in backwards mode? Lost? Thought so, watch the video and it will become clearer.
We enlisted the help of Aoife Scott, Philip Graham, Trish Fitzpatrick, Marcus Lamb, Déaglán Mac Samhráin, Rebecca Flynn and Enda Reilly to help us achieve what you see here.
So here ya go folks, ‘Lullabye’

Peter Daldry singing “Every River” by Runrig and joined by David Brewer on whistles @ the Oregon Scottish Heritage Festival in Albany, Oregon 4.9.11
I have to say this: Peter Daldry has the voice of a true balladeer. He has the type of singing that can tell you a thousand stories with just a phrase. A truly remarkable instrument-his voice.
A brilliantly talented Celtic folk artist who has been described as- “Powerful and passionate vocals , delivered in a celtic folk contemporary style.
Whether singing a heartfelt Dougie Maclean ballad or a rousing Scottish battle song,
Peter Daldry’s vocals draw the listeners in with a conviction rarely heard these days.”
This spring sees the new release “Under A Leaden Sky” for Peter, who has teamed up with long time friend and fellow artist, David Brewer (Molly’s Revenge). In anticipation of the new CD, Peter is available for interview by phone, Skype, or email. We invite you to do a feature story and can supply you will all notable material, mp3’s, and information.
Please contact me for arrangements, and thank you for your support of Celtic music!
Legendary Irish folk icon, FINBAR FUREY will return to Joe’s Pub on Tuesday May 29th. His last show there was in March of 2009 where he played to a sold out crowd.
Finbar Furey, has been making his mark on the music of Ireland and the World for more than four decades. As the lead singer and uillean pipes player for The Fureys, a group he shared with his brothers Eddie, Paul and George, Finbar helped revitalize Ireland’s traditional music scene. Since leaving the band to pursue a solo career in 1993, Finbar has continued to attract attention with his gutsy approach to the music of the Emerald Isle.
Finbar has been well respected for his earthy voice and multiple instrument playing including the banjo, guitar and the tin whistle. As one of the finest uilleann pipe players in the world, he pushed the instrument of his Irish roots into the sphere of contemporary music. His influence can be heard throughout recent years’ popular music from Riverdance to Black 47. Early in his career, Finbar had a stint as the lead singer of the groundbreaking band The Clancy Brothers.
Outside of his songwriting and performing, Finbar has had success as an actor appearing in films including Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York. He recently appeared in the films Paris/Sexyand Strength and Honour as well as the RTÉ Television series Love/Hate.
FInbar will be performing some of your old favorite along with some new tunes from his latest release, ‘Colours’. This is his only NYC and you don’t want to miss it.
