Sean McKeon: Fiddle

Just watching this RTE performance convinced me that these lads will go places. Already, they have established themselves as formidable Irish instrumentalists that mastered their own genre. Dublin Made Me is the duo’s debut album out. There is something heart breaking and sweet in the album’s title. A tribute to the musical culture they grew up listening. Wow just look at that intensity in Liam’s look as he plays the uilleann pipes. More information can be found in these links:

Mac Talla Mor:Hip,Haunting and Traditional

If you want your vocalist to have a strong distinctive voice(ala Natalie Merchant), yet ethereal enough to be called Celtic, then New York based Mac Talla Mor is for you. If you want something traditional but  spliced with irresistible dance beats, music that’s hip but never loses vision then this band is for you.

Scottish pipe playing has always been Mac Talla Mor’s  focal point along with the Illana Regina’s strong vocals and classically trained piano playing. What’s more, each member can play other instruments which makes hearing them a rewarding experience. They have been coined ‘music for the masses’.

Mac Talla Mor in Gaelic means ‘great echo”. Learn more by visiting their home page and watch an uploaded video. Unfortunately there is not much resources on the web at this point. But with your support, the band will go places!

Albums out:

* Piping Hot 2005

* No Man’s Land 2006

* Jacob’s Ladder 2007

* The New Colossus 2008

Get ready for the Cottars!

“Sparkling with beautiful musicianship, pure singing, airy melodies, and the contagious energy of Celtic instrumentation, they infuse Celtic-folk-pop with a splash of youthful vibrancy.”
— The Dallas Morning News/2006

Years ago, during the Celtic Colors International Festival, they dazzled the audience and other performers. They were very young at that time. Child stars from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.  But they took the music seriously. After all, Celtic music has always been a family affair. The Cottars have been everywhere around the world, touring and performing with other notables such as The Chieftains. Critics love them.

The music has a pop appeal but has a deceptive simplicity. Like, wait until you hear each one play an instrument. This is a kind of music you would like to play in your car ,while you drive through the sunset or after the rain. Lovers of Blue Grass music or Alison Kraus will love them. Those who are into straight ahead Celtic jigs will adore their skills. Fiona McGillivray also has a beautiful voice.

Their next tour is on June 27 at Coquitam BC. 3 headline sets (outdoors) at The Scottish Highland Games, 1299 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam. Sponsored by the Scottish Cultural Centre.

Check their official website and also visit their MySpace page though I don’t see any recent updates so far. Oh well, you can still listen to the music though

Rock Pranksters Scythian

scythianIf you want your music to be definitive/distinctive but not too serious, then you might want to listen to Scythian. These are four guys originally fromWashington D.C. They’re classically trained but found common ground in Rock, Jazz, Blue Grass and Celtic music. The members are: Alex (Violin); Joe (Violin); Dan (Guitar/Keyboard); Danny (Vocals/Drums); and joined occasionally by Larissa (Bodhran/Percussion); and Melanie (Violin/Mandolin/Flute). Isn’t it good to know that there are many young bands out there who contribute to the whole thread? This whole umbrella called Celtic music.

Celtic Thunder Making Another Rumble in the Music World

banner2

Celtic Thunder has been making rumbling noises around the word with their ensemble. There are five guys in the group consisting Paul Byrom ,George Donaldson, Keith Harkin, Ryan Kelly and Damian McGinty (who is the youngest). Fans of Celtic Women would know what to expect in this show.

Some of the songs are pop tunes arranged  in a way accessible to fans of Celtic music. Orchestra and traditional instruments are present. The singers do play their own instruments occasionally. We know Celtic music sells and kudos to the people involved with this show for bringing us Celtic music made fresh.
