Breathless with the Bombarde.

Some instruments are show pieces that their appeal goes beyond , just being heard. They have to be seen. The bombarde is no exception. It’s a musical instrument associated with Breton music. It is often used with the Breton bagpipe(biniou). Don’t let its small size fool you. It produces a powerful strident sound. It also required powerful breath to play. This is what I am talking about 🙂 And here’s with the biniou .

The Irish Bouzouki

bouzouki Please read this interesting essay I got from irelandlogue.com

This week’s Irish instrument is the Irish bouzouki.

“Bouzouki?”, you may be asking, “is that an Irish word?”

No, it’s not. The bouzouki is actually a Greek instrument. In fact, the bouzouki is the first known fretted instrument in the world, acting as a precursor to the lute.

In the 1960s, Johnny Moynihan (you remember him from my Moonshine post, right?) introduced the bouzouki to Irish music. While it might seem an odd choice, the bouzouki fits very well into an Irish session, occupying a perfectly mid-range pocket below the mandolin and the reedy sound of flutes, uilleann pipes, accordians and whistles but above that of a guitar.

Andy Irvine picked it up from Johnny, making it quite famous in Irish music and coming up with alternate tunings, but it was Donal Lunny who invented the Irish bouzouki as a distinct instrument. Doing away with the ornate, round-backed Greek shape, he created a small-bodied flat-backed bouzouki with more of a punch for its application in Irish music.

Playing the Oud

Although the Oud has been commonly used in Middle-Eastern countries, its inclusion to Western music has been predominant lately. I am going to showcase instrument used in Loreena McKennitt’s recordings as well as other Celtic musicians who decided to have a cross-over appeal. I am including it here because it is simply beautiful, and the sound it makes is haunting. More information and how you can order it can be found here I’m sure you want to see the video so here it is , being played by Samer Totah: Oud Video

The Uncello: A Strange Musical Instrument

uncelloOk , my research has taken me into a weird path but then again if you read my description it says: A hangout for lovers of Celtic music and then some. Yes it can take all kinds….

Now I just stumbled upon this amazing stringed instrument ,the Uncello. Hell, even You Tube doesn’t have a video of it up yet.  It says:

The Uncello was created for the chamber opera Plasm over ocean in 1977, premiered by the Dashuki Music Theatre at the World Trade Center on June 19. It was featured in New Jersey Monthly magazine and on New Jersey Public Television.

At least we are still in luck here. Composer/instrument designer Dennis Báthory-Kitsz has the details on Noisejunk
