Do you remember how the music inspired you in many ways? How the beat of the bodhran was your own heartbeat. How the uilleann pipes and fiddles filled our days with glee. How conversations extend beyond artists, albums and music news. How friendships developed because of music!

There are things in life that lie to us. But music never will. We will always have music to remember loved ones. Those that are still with us and those that have left us. And like most of Celtic music, it will always have its painful beauty. Remember the laments and the ballads. Remember the mournful sounds of wooden flutes and the cries of bagpipes. We will remember. Cheers!

Gifts and New Album

While there are events in our lives that ebb and flow, we are like willows bending and enduring whatever life hands us. But in that space between two  hills we are blessed by the calm that comes when we behold something beautiful. Be it the sunset or waking up to a fantastic song, the fact is, magic happens. So yes sh*t happens and so is the realization that everything is going to be ok. If we just hold on maybe the next day or week is going to be different.

Finally the new album by Kyle Carey is out!

So what’s new? Kyle Carey has new album out! Yes we’ve waited since last year as she wrote that the said album was going to be recorded during the Celtic Connections in Scotland. She posted pictures from these sessions via Instagram and in her facebook page. Now it is out! I will listen to it and then write a review.

Congratulations to Sarah Frank and Luke Fraser of The Bombadils for finally tying a knot. I knew this was coming. This two will create beautiful music together so I am sure I will be writing about the Bombadils soon, There are many things out there really worth blogging about. And yes check out the picture below. Those are gifts from my English friend Paula. She and Gilly went to Dublin to meet Ian for a photoshoot. You will read more about it in my other blog.

I am also posting a video from Kyle Carey. Thanks to Dave Hallowell for posting this beautiful live performance. You will hear this song in the new album by the same title.

I am hungry for new materials. I am excited for something new. But for now, this is going to be a blog post below 500 words. Just let it out in small doses. We don’t want to choke on too much info. For now.

Dick Savage Remix of Hot Days by Poitin.

It is past 4 a.am. I am listening to the  amazing remix of Hot Days by Dick Savage. If you are not aware yet, Hot Days is the third album by Poitin. It was released in 2006. It has a more ‘pop’ appeal, focusing more on vocal harmonies and ‘tunes you can sing along.’poitin5

The remixed version contains many surprising things. Think of Sonic Youth meets Nine Inch Nails doing Dubstep but with the soothing sound of Afro Celts. I like the difference. It is good to step out of one’s creative environment once in a while. Just to avoid being pigeonholed I guess. Listening to the remix album of Hot Days gives me a different perspective of Poitin. They are not afraid to experiment with different sounds. My favorite track is Crazy Man Michael for its amazing soundscape.

 

Dick Savage has an eclectic taste. He fronts a band by the name of Cold Feet. Their music is more post-punk/gothic-oriented, incorporating good melodies. You should check his/their work out through my other blog Sphere Music. I posted their youtube video about a song inspired by author Neil Gaiman.

It’s really a good thing listening to this type of music at 4 a.m. while multitasking with work.

Michael Mc Cague and Donal Mc Cague , Cuisle – Irish Music Reels

I am blogging from work today. Yay, I am the first person to arrive so I am taking this opportunity to blog about the music video I saw very early this morning. It is called “Cuisle” (Irish for pulse). According to the info I gathered, they (Michael Mc Cague and Donal Mc Cague) both recorded as the final track on Donal’s debut album “Bits N Pieces.” This was filmed in An Culturlann in Belfast on 17th July 2012 and publicly aired around Feb 2013.

For those who don’t have copies of Waylaid Man, it is time to look for that album. IT’s fantastic and many notable Irish musicians contributed their talents to record that album really one of a kind. Looking forward to more trad releases this year and beyond. You all have a great day.

Great performance by Maria Doyle Kennedy

I’ve heard of her name mentioned many times in the world of TV and music. But it is the first time I saw Maria Doyle Kennedy perform live. You have to pardon me Irish music lovers. I have been covering a lot of music in the Celtic genre that there are artists that are still waiting in my ‘must listen to ‘ list. Anyway her performance of The Most Beautiful People are Broken blew me away. There is something in that voice. There is truth in that song. The backing of Kieran Kennedy and Donal Lunny are exquisite.

this means I need to watch Orphan Black because she plays Ms Sadler. She also appeared in The Commitments. One of my favorite Irish movies of all time. This is my amazing introduction to her wonderful talent. I will follow her career from now on.
