A Must See...

My friend Fiach Moriarty will let you hear the new songs he recorded for the second album ‘The Last Romance’, due for release in 2012. Last year he took a break from recording to perform in venues across the United States including the famous Interceltique Festival in Lorient France.  This is a must hear performance that will surely delight lovers of Irish music. Here’s a nice review from Whelans: http://www.whelanslive.com/index.php/archives/7234

Introducing Declan de Barra

Declan de Barra is an indie Irish singer of somber beauty. Check this song out.

…..and i know i’m far away,
but i know i’ll be back soon someday,
so hold on to all that you left,
don’t let the memories fade to the depths…
i wont leave you on your own
someday soon i’ll be on your shore…

Nice Fusion.

I found this artist and I got hooked. Her voice is really lush. If you combine Soul, RnB, Folk , Irish and a little bit of Bluegrass then you get Verlette Simon.

Enter the Haggis: Gutter Anthems

An album where all tracks stand out.

Canadian  band Enter the Haggis will keep your winter days and nights warm with their captivating grooves, energetic performance and amazing song arrangements. Tracks like The Litter and the Leaves will remind mainstream audience of Queen especially when that piano part glides in. Murphy’s Ashes is another example of what happens when the band explores the territory of Tangerine Dream and Pink Floyd. Sea of Crutches makes me smile with its sunny melody. The pounding rhythms and strings of Broken Line cries for an amazing movie with its cinematic appeal.I am rocking my head listening to all tracks. Haggis is about attitude and energy but the new songs also deal with texture and maturity. And yes I close my eyes and let the music take me away.

I hope you buy the album and support this great band. We deserve more music like this!

The Brave Trailer, Madeleine Stowe and The Drovers

You gotta see this movie!

Jimmy sent this link a few days ago and I was so caught up with Annalivia that I forgot to post this. My bad! This current post is dedicated to TV shows and movies.  Here’s the blurb:

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In Brave, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.

Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Directed by Mark Andrews (The Incredibles, Ratatouille, John Carter of Mars) and Brenda Chapman (The Lion King, Prince of Egypt), and produced by Katherine Sarafian (Lifted, The Incredibles), Brave is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and the signature Pixar humour enjoyed by audiences of all ages.

Sounds like a beautiful movie to me. Not to mention the voices behind.

If you are wondering who is singing the song in this movie, it is no other than Scottish musician Julie Fowlis. Here is the video:

Remember when she played a Celtic rock fiddler?

My favorite TV shows are: The Secret Circle, The Vampire Diaries, Terra Nova, Revenge and Haven.  Madeleine Stowe plays the character of Victoria Grayson in Revenge(Based on The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas). I learned about this show from Timothy. The two movies Last of The Mohican and Blink  where she appeared are memorable to me.

==================================================================

This is a funny opening scene in Blink where she plays a blind fiddler of the Celtic Rock band The Drovers opposite Aidan Quinn. Parents please take your kids away from the computer!

The nice violin part…

And now ladies and gentlemen…The Drovers.

Kilrush, John Byrne and Ouch!

Ouch! This headache gets in the way. I am past the age of rock and roll.  But sometimes I have this fantasy of waking up and asking hey where’s my other shoe. There’s also a part of me who is a frustrated DJ.

There’s this local radio station I frequented  a lot. The manager was aware that I was into Celtic music. So apart from bands like The Calling, Lifehouse, Snow Patrol and Keane, they wanted to add something different. Most of the time, people hear Tori Amos, Nine Inch Nails and  Emo bands. Then they started hearing a bit of Loreena McKennitt, Clannad, Brigid Boden, and Altan. Soon friends started approaching me saying, were those your CDs? I’d start laughing. I love the idea of influencing people. It is fun.

My music calendar told me that  the band Kilrush will play  this Saturday, January 21. Let me give you a sample of how they sound like if ever you decide to go. It is fun to have a little craic after a long week of work work work work!

John Byrne made a wonderful collaboration with Fiach Moriarty last Christmas and that got him to the radar. But this guy has made countless followers already. I love his ballads. And what’s an acoustic band without a wonderful cello or fiddle player?
