Other blogs , Other thoughts..

Got an interesting message from Jennifer of World Music News Wire. Here is one interesting site if you want fresh news on what’s happening around  in terms of World Music. MY friend once corrected me that it is World Beat (a.k.a format). But I don’t really think so. Some of the World Music I heard doesn’t really require beats. Anyway,  I got this interesting article about Altan which I’d say is beautifully written(picture courtesy of the site):

Ireland’s Gift to the World: The Celtic Masters of Altan Celebrate a Quarter Century of Tradition and Innovation

While checking the links, I also bumped into this blogger from Galicia. I have covered anything Galician in this site and I am glad to read something from a person who is literally from there. Politics, music(mostly) and day-to-day events can read here:

..And finally Anne Roos whom I covered here is showcasing her Renaissance Fair performance. Check more of the lovely pictures here:

What is DADGAD Guitar Tuning?

It is fascinating how musicians like the late   Michael O’Domhnaill, Luka Bloom, Paul McSherry or even rocker Jimmy Paige and folk icon Neil Young made guitar sound THAT way. I did some research and came across this tuning called DADGAD which is also referred to as modal tuning.

It follows the art of how bagpipes are tuned with the drones. Unlike the standard    EADGBE, DADGAD tuning creates that warmth, ethereal sound that is distinctive in players of Celtic music.

Youtube has shown me  a lot of ways to tune the guitar in the DADGAD and I chose this video which I think is more helpful in explaining the procedure. If  you are an expert or a newbie, you might try considering this kind of tuning as an alternative, to create a distinct sound of your own. Check this one out by Jamie Roberts.

Following our DADGAD tutorial is a musician known for this : Paul McSherry.

According to his Myspace:

Originally from Finaghy road north in West Belfast, I now reside in Magherafelt, Co. Derry and have been playing the guitar (DADGAD tuning) from the age of 14.
At present, I am Head of Technology and Design in Drumcree College, Portadown, Co. Armagh.

Oh Look! An Enya Baseball Cap.

The Brennan siblings introduced me to Irish and the rest of the Celtic music in the world when I was still walking around in music. So it is no surprise that I will go back from time to time.  I went to Northern Skyline which is the Clannad News site and found that Moya Brennan and Cormac de Barra will be releasing an album called My Match Is A Makin.

I think this is cute. You can get the merchandise here: http://www.enyastore.co.uk/
